Why You Need a Roof Inspection After a Hurricane (Even If It Looks Fine)

By Legacy Roofing SRQ · June 20, 2026 · Sarasota & Manatee, FL

After a hurricane passes, the most dangerous thing a homeowner can do is glance up from the driveway, see no missing shingles, and assume the roof is fine. In our experience across Sarasota and Manatee, the storm damage that costs people the most is the damage they could not see, and that did not leak until much later.

Storm damage hides

High wind does not always rip shingles off. More often it lifts them just enough to break the adhesive seal, or it loosens and slightly shifts tiles, or it leaves hairline cracks in tile that are invisible from the ground. Wind-driven debris can bruise or puncture a roof, knock granules off shingles, and bend or pull flashing around vents and chimneys. From your yard, the roof looks untouched. Up close, the waterproofing has been compromised.

The leak shows up later, and costs more

Here is the part that catches people off guard: a broken seal or a cracked tile does not pour water into your living room the next day. Water creeps in slowly, into the underlayment and decking, where it sits and spreads. You might not see a ceiling stain for months, sometimes a year or two. By then a repair that would have been simple right after the storm has become rotted decking, mold, and a much bigger bill, and it is far harder to connect it back to the storm.

Why a look from the ground is not enough

You simply cannot assess storm damage from the ground. It takes getting on the roof and into the attic, and a trained eye that knows what lifted edges, bruising, soft spots, and stressed flashing look like. That is exactly what a professional post-storm inspection is for.

Timing matters

Get your roof inspected and documented soon after a storm, while the cause is clear. Early documentation protects you, and catching a small issue early keeps it a small, affordable repair instead of a structural one down the road.
